• Transdermal or topical formulations may offer advantages over traditional dosage forms. When a patient has trouble swallowing, we can often formulate the needed drug as a topical gel or cream. Transdermal medications are administered by massaging the medication onto an appropriate area.


• Troches are a type of lozenge that are placed between the cheek and gums and allowed to dissovle. This enables the medication to absorb through the lining of the cheek versus orally through the gastrointestinal tract. This may provide more rapid absorption and can bypass metabolism by digestive enzymes.


• Capsules can be compounded to contain multiple ingredients.


• Suppositories are another dosage form available.


• Suspensions/Solutions can be compounded for pediatric patients when commercial adult formulaions can not meet their needs.
